When I first arrived in Boston, I was already pretty
familiar with the city, growing up only an hour away and making frequent trips
to the city. However actually living here proved to be a completely different
experience. I grew up in Fairhaven, MA, a suburb of New Bedford, but still a
pretty dense and walk able suburb and I orientated myself by streets, using my
home street and Route 6 as sort of lay lines, even while driving. It also
helped that most of my town was laid out in a grid. When I moved to Boston I
now had the T that I could use for transportation rather than my car. As a
result the Green Line, the E Branch more specifically, became my lay line for
the travels throughout the city. From there I could use it to plan my travels,
by using Park Street or Government Center as transfers. Overall I use the T,
and sometimes streets, more than actual landmarks in my way finding around
Boston.
