Ise Jingu is one of the most compelling buildings I have studied thus far. It is proof that there is simplistic architecture that makes a powerful statement. It appears to be a simple, rectangular wooden structure. There are important hidden details, however, like the use of notches rather than glue or nails. It also demonstrates the close-knit community and the importance of the existing environment. Every 20 years, the community gathers to watch the structure be rebuilt exactly as it is with the same trees that have been used for thousands of years. It is a type of architecture unique to Japan. It is also a wooden structure that does not wear out over time. Boston is considered to be a very historical town, and it seeks to preserve its historical buildings. However, these will eventually become run down. Ise Jingu will always be a piece of Japan’s history that lasts forever. The importance of the built environment, the construction as a community gathering, and the historical integrity are what makes this building amazing.
