Ancient Greece is what managed to really intrigue me this semester. Not only was I looking at it in a historical stand point, but my elective, Proportions in Architecture also spent a good deal of time analyzing the Greeks. I couldn’t believe the lengths the Greeks went through to ensure proper visual proportions were met. The curving of the slab on the Parthenon, the way each individual column tapers inward and the fact that every single piece to the Parthenon is unique to its position. I also loved how the Greeks had a system of measurement and proportion that was universal to all masons. Because the Greeks enlisted masons from all corners of the empire not all used the same system, though somehow they managed to create a system that was able to work for all. The last and probably most amazing aspect of the Parthenon is how quickly it was built, in about 15 years while the restoration, despite all the advances in technology has taken over 25 years.
