Chris McEwen Blog Response 3

Walking through the MFA, the piece that stuck out the most to me was the relief pieces from the Temple of Athena at Assos. The MFA has a significant amount of historic pieces and examples of what used to be, but this seemed too significant of a piece. Even though it isn’t the most famous building, it is an important part of Greek history and this raises the question of why it is here, and not in Greece. I remember talking about the Elgin marble statues that were stolen from the Acropolis over 2 centuries ago and are rightfully Greece’s. Small artifacts I believe are typical of museums to house examples of, but this was part of the front relief that sat atop the columns of a Greek Temple. Should they really remain here? Or should they be sent back to Greece where they, like the Elgin marble statues, truly belong?
