Matt Saltis-Blog 3

While visiting the Museum of Fine Arts I was able to make a connection to what we learned in lecture with an artifact that caught my eye. A relief of the architrave off the Temple of Athena at Assos holds distinction in the fact that with this temple it is the only Doric temple in the region of Assos, which is known for its ionic architecture. Like the Parthenon, which is also dedicated to Athena, the temple at Assos is within the highest part of the city overlooking it. I wonder if like the Parthenon, was this temple also built with characteristics of entasis, and small quantities of right angles while still appearing plum. The sophisticated craftsmanship of Athenian architecture astonishes me, and the Parthenonic feel is seen all over. The detail added into the relief gives viewers the essence of Greek character and how building was essential to their culture.
