The connection between classical and modern architecture can be traced throughout history in various aspects of design and form. One of the most noticeable and significant styles recognized today is from the Ancient Greek era. Through visiting the MFA and walking through the new addition, it is clear to see the impact that Greece had on the architectural world. One of the pieces in the Greek exhibit that caught my eye was a portion of the relief that was preserved from The Temple of Athena at Assos. Looking at the carved stone, one can see the detail and craft that was put into the construction. Not only did these carvings come together to form a beautiful structure, but they also preserved a sense of history and storytelling within them. Together these relief pieces reflected the ability and skill of the Greeks along with their cultural influences and habits. Translating this method into our modern time, reliefs can still be found among buildings and designs that provide the same feeling and information. From graffiti to abstract sculptures, this style has lived on for generations. The influence of time and place also continues to play a role in the look and purpose of these relief constructions.  Through this ancient style of detailing one can trace the similarities and differences among cultures and regions and I believe this will continue to hold true in the future.
