There is a statue titled "Venus" in the MFA, created by Fernando Botero. This piece stuck out as it portrayed certain contradictions that seemed to only be understood through the knowledge of some historical context. Bearing the title "Venus," of the Roman Goddess of love, beauty, and fertitlity, the statue is physically much more plump than what would be considered "beautiful" by the current view of beauty. However, the "beauty" of this piece lies in its historical allusion to the more ancient views of fertility and beauty as round and voluptuous. Much like in architecture, a knowledge of the history and context behind a work is vital to knowing why different methods were used instead of others. We need to know where we come from to know where we can still go.
