There is one event that has stood the test of time and spanned centuries since the days of the Gods. The Olympics started as a Greek tradition in the mid 750’s BCE. It was a chance for Greece’s most athletic men to come together and compete in various events to honor their Gods. The piece of art I have chosen from the MFA instantly reminded me of this tradition that has such a rich and extended history. The mixing bowl depicts men in a sprinting competition during the ancient Olympic games. In the ancient town of Delphi, the citizens built a stadium where these men were able to compete in front of thousands of spectators. Since the times at Delphi, stadiums for Olympic games have developed dramatically both in size and in technology. Its amazing to think that The Beijing National Stadium by Herzog and De Meuron was influenced through centuries of designs from a single stadium much like the one at Delphi.
