The video on Enuma Elish we watched was very interesting, so when I saw this relief of a “winged genius” it immediately made me think of Marduk who killed Tiamat for the gods. This paired up nicely with something that had caught my eye earlier that I had liked but at the time didn’t think I could make a connection back to our lectures. The “striding lion” originally caught my eye because of the extreme detail that is in it, and the way it comes off the wall really brings it to life for me. However, after re-watching the video, it made me think about the Gate of Babylon that according to legends was built by the gods in honor of Marduk who created humans so that the gods could rest. I wasn’t sure if the Ishtar gate, was the same gate, or if the “striding lion” was from the Ishtar gate, but it certainly is of the same style used on the Ishtar gate. There are two things that really stand out to me about all of this, the first that Marduk and Tiamat are apart of a “race” that is higher then the gods, and secondly that it was the gods that built monumental structures and not humans.
well done!
