Anette Balestrand Blog 6

“Pillars of the Earth” is a historical novel in which the characters and relationships in the book are fictional but the history is nonfictional. The book tells the story of the construction of a cathedral and the evolution it goes through as it outlives generations of people. This book also introduced me to Ad Quadratum and Ad Triangulum. I found these concepts to be very interesting, and am still fascinated by ancient building technology. Before I read this book I did not know much about how the Cathedrals were designed and this book has given me some very interesting insight into that process. I love reading about the detailing that went into the creation of a cathedral and learning about how much of the process that went into these beautiful buildings was almost purely mechanical expression. Learning about this mechanical process have thought me to let go of the need to be a part of every step of my design, that it can be freeing to allow the mechanics take control.
