JT Breda: Blog 5

After learning about the relationship between light and structure I began looking around the city for goo examples of this idea. I though that both natural light and artificial light should be involved in the relationship between light and structure. I decided that new addition to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, by Renzo Piano was a great example. The new building is based on the ideas of light. The structure of this building can clearly be seen and related to because of light. In the daylight the shadows cast on the exterior structure of the stairs create these angled shadows that mimic the lines of the angle portion of the building. At night this vertical structure disappears and through artificial lighting the structure of the stairs them selves can be viewed, which is not apparent in the day light due to the visibility of the strong verticals. The different types of light imitated on the structure of this new building play with what can be seen and the visual depth of the structure and surfaces themselves.
