The arched vault at Christopher Columbus Park works in with sunlight to create an elongated volume of space spanning the length of the park. The diagonal arches interwoven between the structural members act as a filter to ease the intensity of light in the space. A directionality is established by the resulting shadow cast on the ground from the structure. The effect of light penetrating through the arches and leaves bares a resemblance to the Medieval method of expressing the ethereal qualities of light to make the space seem, at least serene and peaceful. Instead of using ornate stained glass portraying the beauty of god's world, the simple diamond pattern of the arches spanning across and the diffusing effect of the leaves portray the natural surroundings of the area in an almost holy way.
