While touring the San Francisco Federal Building, I noticed there are a lot of small details that, when illuminated, can transform the way you experience the building. For example, the aluminum stairs have many perforations, and light coming through the large windows in the stairway create a dramatic dotted pattern all around. Aside from the windows, the stairways are dimly lit, therefore the stairs become a screen that allows light to disperse and pass through the structure, illuminating the dark space.
