The mapparium at the Christian Science Center has two types of structure to support the lighting. There is one that holds the glass in place and another behind it that holds the lights and allows them to move. From the bridge inside the globe you only get to see the structure supporting the glass and that is when the light takes over. The lights change depending one what country or continent the tour guide is focusing on, to make you turn and notice it more. When the globe is lit up, you loose site of the structure itself and it give an illusion of just a glass ball.
(They wouldn't let me take a picture on the tour so I took one off line)
