Nathan Neff Blog 5
There are several uses of structure that create different effects of light in the Boston Public Library. The courtyard collects light through reflection of bright colors, but the columns and rib vaults create spaces of shading around the ceilings and walls under the balcony. In the new extension there are instances where a some direct light is allowed to flow into the space. There are also instances, such as the center room of the new extension allows diffused light to enter, however similar to the court yard there are instances where the structure pockets and causes a shading effect. The B.P.L. may use the relation of light and structure to create the mood in spaces, such as relaxing, lively or quiet areas. In comparison, the Armenian Genocide Museum (top left), has a very dense structure, swallowing the light and creating a heavy feeling, while the B.P.L. has more of a enlightening relationship of light and structure. Light and structure can be used to set the mood, highlight, or create interesting spaces as it did in the B.P.L.
